Surviving with Scars: Body Image Interventions for Individuals Affected by Illness and Trauma

Body image concerns involving scarring and disfigurement are prevalent for individuals with a variety of medical conditions, and are important to address as part of comprehensive care. Professionals working with medical populations play an important role in the delivery of psychosocial support to address body image issues such as distress associated with appearance, difficulties with viewing affected body parts, concerns about social interactions, and discomfort and pain associated with scars.

This 90-minute webinar is designed to provide information on body image intervention techniques to address scarring and disfigurement concerns. Led by professionals across the fields of clinical psychology, medical massage therapy, and medical aesthetics we will cover the following topics in this program:

  • Tips for clinical assessment of body image concerns related to scarring
  • Treatment strategies to enhance coping skills and management of difficult emotions surrounding body image changes
  • Cosmesis and corrective makeup approaches to body image intervention
  • Skin care fundamentals for addressing scarring
  • Use of massage therapy to minimize scar formation and to manage/prevent scar tissue pain and complications

All participants will receive a brief resource guide as part of this program.
