Reimagining How We Address Body Image in Cancer Care

Body image challenges are very common for people facing cancer – but they’re often overlooked during treatment. Hair loss, scarring, swelling, and many other changes in appearance or function can deeply affect a person’s confidence, sense of self, and mental well-being. Yet, few healthcare professionals receive the training needed to address these important aspects of care.

That’s why we created the Body Image Group (BIG) Wellness Institute; to fill this unmet need in oncology. Our programs unite expertise from psychosocial care, oncology aesthetics, and medical massage therapy to educate and empower clinicians to provide compassionate, patient-centered body image support.

Are You Ready to Make a Difference in Body Image Care?

BIG Wellness Institute programs are designed for professionals who work with patients affected by cancer, illness, or trauma.

These programs are built for you if you are:

  • A nurse, physician assistant, or physician who wants to feel more confident initiating and navigating body image conversations.

  • A social worker, psychologist, or psychiatrist seeking advanced approaches to improve mental health care for body image challenges.

  • A rehabilitation specialist looking to integrate physical and emotional recovery strategies that support body image adjustment.

  • An esthetician or cosmetologist helping clients manage hair loss, scarring, and skin changes.

  • A medical massage therapist working with scar tissue, swelling, or pain in oncology care.

  • A clinic or program director seeking consistent, evidence-based body image training for your team.

Why Attend Our Body Image Training Courses, Workshops & Webinars?

Body image distress is common in cancer care, but often goes unaddressed because most providers haven’t been trained to recognize or manage it. When these concerns are overlooked, patients are more likely to feel dissatisfied with their care and their outcomes. Targeted training gives healthcare professionals the tools and confidence they need to identify body image issues early and respond using interventions grounded in research and clinical practice. It strengthens communication, supports better patient experiences and leads to more effective, compassionate care.

Our unique interdisciplinary model integrates three areas of professional expertise:

hands

Psychosocial Oncology

Mental health support for managing the psychological, social and behavioral impacts of body image distress across the cancer experience.

Oncology Esthetics

Appearance-focused care for hair loss, scarring and skin changes during and after treatment, helping patients navigate visible changes with confidence and support.

Oncology Massage

Specialized techniques to address function, swelling, scarring, pain, and sensory changes while promoting body awareness, comfort and recovery.

Together, these disciplines provide oncology, wellness, and healthcare professionals with practical tools and strategies they can use immediately in clinical encounters – along with resources and referral options to share directly with their patients.

Meet the Experts Behind Body Image Group (BIG) Wellness Institute

The Body Image Group (BIG) Wellness Institute was founded by three professionals who approach body image from distinct, complementary disciplines: psychology, oncology esthetics, and medical massage therapy.

Each of us works directly with patients in our respective fields. Through BIG Wellness Institute we've joined forces to teach healthcare professionals what we do - bringing together emotional, cosmetic, and somatic perspectives to strengthen patient care across disciplines.

We believe body image care doesn’t belong to one specialty. Every professional involved in cancer care can play a meaningful role in addressing it.
